For everyone who knows me, knows that my English was really bad in school & that I never cared to learn it because I was so convinced I was going to stay in Germany forever, so why even bother.
Of course I knew the basics, but I wasn’t sure about how I pronounced words right . I really learned the most of the English I know now through communicating daily with him & watching Netflix with subtitles! (Thank you Criminal Minds, Supernatural, Friends, New Girl & so on) we still do this & I think we won’t never change it.
When I first went to America with my friends, I had them talking for me because I was so insecure about my English. It really was that bad!
I even attended an online school & learned English this way, but I’m just not the type of person who sits down & reads a book & tadaaaa.
I learn the best by doing it. Interact with me & I am learning way faster – I think thats pretty common tho.
We both can’t believe how bad my English was when we first started dating & were wondering how we even communicated, shoutout to the fire Sex! It made him overlook my low level of english (he made me say this because he wants me to keep it real with y’all! But also he is supporting me with my Blog lol so why not)!
But he made me become a better version of myself just by learning his language! Big credit for his patience please!
Even though Ava can’t talk yet, I am trying to talk to her in German all the time & her father in English. I know it is for her benefits later to be able to speak both Languages fluently. ( I think that is so cool!)
When Dominic is in the house I speak English so he understands what I am saying to her too. Sometimes I’ll say the word German first & then in English.
I really hope this doesn’t confuse her, but that’s also helps Dominic learn my mother language!! So, it’s only a win-win situation!
I’m really excited to see what her first words will be. If she’s starts talking in English or in German first! For now she’s just babbling – I think it’s so cute! She’s trying to talk to us in her own language, but girl we just don’t understand you
I really think you should try to teach yourself or your kids a second language as well! Not by force, of course. But if one of you also speaks another Language, why not? There is no harm for anyone.
The most common sentences are already a big step for everyone. Start with: “Hi, my name is… How are you?”
& maybe find 1-2 people you can talk to in the other Language you want to learn, because nothing is better than using the language daily! Believe me.
If you need any help or advice or if you even can share some of your experiences how you tought your baby two languages – feel free to contact me.
